As per Google’s Terms and Conditions, DoubleDutch is not permitted to host clients’ apps in its own Google Play Developer account. DoubleDutch continues its app management activities by gaining access to clients’ Google Play Developer accounts in the Release Manager role.
In mid-2015, DoubleDutch adapted its process to be in perfect compliance with Google’s Terms and Conditions regarding app publishing and ownership of apps. This change required that all our clients create their own Google Play Developer accounts and then grant access to DoubleDutch so that app publishing and management could continue. After that, the client’s app was transferred from DoubleDutch’s account to the client’s account. From that point onwards, DoubleDutch’s policy regarding publishing Android apps has been to do so via the client’s account.
Permissions and Actions
DoubleDutch asks for a specific permission level within a client’s account. This is the role of Release Manager.
This is the best option for DoubleDutch because we are then able to control the standard of service provided and it requires less time troubleshooting self-managed issues close to the event date. It allows us to work autonomously and get apps published, updated, or fixed as fast as possible.
Note: if necessary, it is possible to grant Release Manager access to only the app or apps created and managed by DoubleDutch.
The specific permissions of this role are:
- Create & edit draft apps
- Edit store listing, pricing & distribution
- Manage Production APK’s
- Manage Alpha & Beta APK’s
- Manage Alpha & Beta users
- Create apps restricted to domain
- Change distribution restriction
- Reply to reviews
- Edit games
- Publish games
This permission level is given to one functional account within DoubleDutch meant for this work. It is not given to any personal account of a DoubleDutch employee. Access is shared by the team that is responsible for app publishing and management; App Operations.
Note: This role does not allow for changing any fundamental account information. That permission is restricted to the Google account that was registered with the creation of the Google Play Developer account.
The common actions that are carried out within a Google Play Developer account by a DoubleDutch App Operations engineer are the following:
- Create and update app listings (descriptions, images, name, etc)
- Upload APK’s
- Editing distribution details
- Edit (if required by client) app availability
- Edit app age rating
- Unpublish/republish apps
All other aspects of the account are irrelevant to our work.
The reason why we advise clients to grant us Release Manager access is because it is the profile that encompasses all the activities we need to carry out and enables autonomy. This way we can guarantee speedy publishing and troubleshooting if need be.
Inviting DoubleDutch as a Release Manager
To add DoubleDutch as a Release Manager, navigate to the User Accounts & Rights page from your Developer Console. You need to be logged in as the Account Owner (the email used to register for the account). Click the 'Invite new user' button.
A pop-up will open that prompts the user to invite a new user via email address. Enter email@example.com as the email and choose “Release manager” for Role.
You will receive a confirmation email when DoubleDutch has accepted your invitation. Once the invitation is accepted, DoubleDutch is ready to distribute Android apps on your behalf. For more information, please click here.
